Yesterday, while at the right-on grocery store, R. excitedly picked up what she thought were broccoli florets. This was a good thing because, like most people, she's more interested in florets than stalks. This evening when she pulled the veg in question out of the refrigerator, she was astonished to find that she had actually purchased "asparation," a marriage of broccoli and asparagus. Since she's not keen on asparagus this was
not a good thing, though apparently the veg in question went down well.
Still, you've got to wonder how they came up with the name. It's easy to imagine a bunch of baggy-suited young things sitting around a novelty table brainstorming names, but it is very difficult to figure out how the contest was won by what sounds like a cross between the not terribly good for you sugar substitute aspertane and the thing they put in your mouth to suck out your saliva when you're in the dentist's chair.
